Isabella Blow was never respected as much in life as she is now in death. The London born stylist and fashion editor was always considered something of a bit player and oddball especially with her flamboyant outfits and wild hats. Those that were close to her remember her as a delightful and intelligent but complicated person.
Over 200 newspapers around the world reported her death with many running feature articles about her unusual life and contribution to the world of fashion. The Herald Tribune called her, "one of the most imaginative, inventive and intelligent forces in fashion".
She was born into a failed British aristocratic family and for many years worked at menial jobs including a post office cleaner. Blow eventually moved on to a fashion career and relocated to New York where she became an assistant to Anna Wintour. She is often credited with discovering designers Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, models Stella Tennant and Sophie Dahl and milliner Philip Treacy. But she got left behind as their careers took off.A fixture over the years at the fashion weeks wearing her signature hats and headgear she managed to find a place for herself as the Fashion Editor at Large for Tatler Magazine where she enjoyed a long association. The 48 year-old died as the result of a drug overdose. In recent years she survived several suicide attempts.
